TAKING OUT THE GUESS WORK FROM YOUR NUTRITION: USING TECH

THE PROBLEM

One of the biggest challenges in dialing in your nutrition is the trial and error component. Wouldn't you agree? Often times this is what can cause burnout or failure to continue. What if there was a way to drastically minimize that? Well, by using technology we can!

the solution: using tech

By using devices that measure your ketone levels and where your overall metabolism is, you can effectively “hack your metabolism” and guarantee your results by seeing real time statistics. Let’s use the example of measuring our ketone levels. Using a device to measure you breath ketones not only helps you know whether or not you’re in ketosis, but how deep. Which, effectively tells you the rate at which you’re burning fat. NOTE: Body fat is expelled through the lungs. Therefore, this is the ideal way to measure rate of body fat being burned. Additionally, your other option is to prick your fingers multiple times per day to see what your blood ketone levels are. Speaking from experience, I’d rather use a breathalyzer.

Now let’s take it a step further. You can now see the effect the meals you’re eating have on your ketosis. Are they popping you out of ketosis unknowingly? For myself, some products labeled “KETO” can do this, which blunts my fat loss efforts. You can also see if your training levels are at the proper intensity. I found that if I didn’t fuel properly with enough MCTs, some HIIT workouts would cause me to pop out of ketosis. I wouldn’t have known any of this unless I was measuring my levels with a ketone breathalyzer.

To summarize this: now you can simply stop stressing about the variables of food and exercise and simply measure. Continue eating the foods and doing the exercise that keep you burning fat, and you’re guaranteed to get results!

DEEPER DIVE

How does this work?

The ketone breathalyzers measure the level of acetone in the breath. The higher amount of acetone, the deeper you are in ketosis, and therefore the higher amount of body fat you’re burning per minute.

LEVELS AND WHAT THEY MEAN

According to my Ketoscan, the optimal level is 10ppm. From testing, I’ve found I have a burst of energy and mental acuity at 4.0-5.0ppm. I achieve a euphoric state at around 10ppm. And when I’m in my extended fasts, I’ve registered as high as 25ppm. NOTE: More isn’t always better. Getting your ketones too high can make you feel ill.

Further, I’ve found in some instances that I actually feel better at levels around 10ppm. But that is because when I get to those higher levels, it’s usually in period of my extended fasts where I’m doing an accelerated detox where toxins are being processed by my system.

devices

  1. Ketoscan. This is the device I own. I’ve just kept using it until the 300 measurements run out. Using a ppm converter, I’ve matched up with my blood ketones and found it to be fairly accurate.

  2. Biosense. I’d say my next purchase will probably be the Biosense because it seems to be built on a higher quality platform. This gives me confidence in its accuracy, especially because of genuine endorsements from experts like Dr. Dom D’Agostino. I also like that you don’t have to send it in to get the sensor recalibrated.

  3. Lumen. Lumen is a device that measures the amount of carbon in your breath. I’m using this in tandem with my keytone breathalyzer to help me dial in my carb cycling. They have a substantial amount of research behind th device, and I found the insights it gives me very beneficial.
